Promotion to Dual LPI & CLA Certification
On February 9th, 2010 Novell and the Linux Professional Institute announced an international partnership to standardize their entry-level Linux certification programs on LPIC-1. Under the terms of the agreement, all qualified LPIC-1 holders will have the opportunity to apply for Novell CLA certification without additional exams or fees.
As with all Novell certifications, course work is never required. One need only pass a certification test in order to achieve the certification. Please see the Test Registration tab for more information on testing.

Register at a Testing Center
The costs for the tests differ depending on the area of the world you live. For example, Standard Tests in the US cost $125 and the Practicum costs $195.
From time to time, Novell Training Services may require you to take an exam to keep current on the latest solutions and technologies. These exams are considered a Continuing Certification Requirement (CCR), which keep your skills up-to-date and keep your certification valuable in the marketplace.
Each candidate must submit the Novell Training Services Certification Agreement before certification can be awarded. Take advantage of submitting the agreement when you test. Or the agreement can be viewed and downloaded and the signature form returned to Novell.

The Certified Novell Engineer (CNE) certification is Novell’s highest credential for network professionals. Individuals who hold this certification have demonstrated that they are capable of solving advanced network problems. To be eligible for the CNE track, candidates must first obtain the Certified Network Administrator (CNA) certification.
Exam details and overview
As with the CNA certification, there are two separate paths for obtaining the CNE certification depending on the area of expertise the candidate wishes to specialise in:
CNE in Novell Open Enterprise Server for NetWare (3 exams required)
CNE in Netware 6 (5 exams required)
CNA OES – Novell Open Enterprise Server for NetWare
To earn the CNA OES credential, candidates are required to pass a total of three exams (one of which is the required exam for the prerequisite CNA credential):
050-696 Foundations of Novell Open Enterprise Server for NetWare
66 questions in 75 minutes. A passing score is 650. When this exam is passed, the candidate earns the CNA OES certification.
050-707 Novell Open Enterprise Server for NetWare Advanced Administration
62 questions in 90 minutes. A passing score is 536 points.
050-695 Novell eDirectory Design and Implementation: eDirectory 8.8
70 questions in 90 minutes. A passing score is 608 points.
CNA – NetWare 6
To earn the CNA NetWare 6 credential, candidates are required to pass a total of five form-based exams (one of which is the required exam for the prerequisite CNA credential):
050-686 Foundations of Novell Networking
66 questions in 75 minutes. Passing score is 650 or higher. When this exam is passed, the candidate earns the CNA NetWare 6 certification.
050-690 Novell Network Management: NetWare 6.5
72 question in 120 minutes. Passing score is 524 or higher.
050-691 Advanced Novell Network Management: NetWare 6.5
65 questions in 90 minutes. Passing score is 536 or higher.
050-695 Novell eDirectory Design and Implementation: eDirectory 8.8
70 questions in 90 minutes. Passing score is 608 or higher.
050-694 ZENworks 7 for Desktop Management
60 questions in 110 minutes. Passing score is 584 or higher.

The cost for each individual exam is US$125 however for those outside the U.S. prices may vary due to currency and local factors. Novell exams can be taken through most Pearson VUE testing centers worldwide.
From time to time, Novell run promotional discounts on exam fees for particular certification tracks, so keep an eye on their website for special deals. Discount exam vouchers (with free training material bundled in) can also be obtained through independant third-party suppliers.
Retake Policy
If unsuccessful at their first attempt, a candidate may retake the exam (after paying the applicable exam fee) as soon as they are ready – there is no mandatory waiting period. If, however, they are unsuccessful a second time, they must then wait a period of at least 30 days before their third and any subsequent attempt. Candidates who successfully pass any of the CNE exams must wait at least 12 months before retaking the same exam.
Continuing Certification Registration
Novell certifications are tied to the version of technology that they were gained on, and, as such, do not expire. Novell do, however, require that the candidate signs and agrees to take any Continuing Certification Registration (CCR) exams that are required by Novell from time to time. Once CNE qualified, it becomes the candidate’s responsibility to keep up-to-date with what CCRs are needed. Candidates who do not keep up-to-date and complete the required CCR’s will risk having their CNE credential revoked and they may no longer be classed as CNE qualified.

The Certified Novell Administrator (CNA) certification is the first credential for network administrators working with Novell’s NetWare software. Individuals holding this certification are qualified to provide software support in professional offices, small business and corporate information services. The CNA is the first step to becoming a Certified Novell Engineer (CNE).

050-696 Foundations of Novell Open Enterprise Server for NetWare
The exam is a form-based exam consisting of 66 questions and 75 minutes in which to complete them. Candidates must get a total score of 650 or higher to pass. In form-based exams, every candidate is given the same set of questions and are then graded on the number of questions they answer correctly. Netware 6.5
To become certified under the NetWare 6.5 track candidates must pass one exam:
050-686 Foundations of Novell Networking
The exam is also a form-based exam consisting of 66 questions and 75 minutes in which to complete them. Candidates must achieve a total score of 650 or higher to pass. Topics covered on the exam include:

The cost for either CNA exam is US$125 however, depending on the country location of the testing center, prices may vary due to currency and local factors. Novell exams are administered through Pearson VUE testing centers which have locations worldwide.
Check in on the official Novell website from time to time, as Novell periodically offer discounts on the exam fees. Additionally, discount exam vouchers are often available that not only reduce the cost of the exam but also include free training material. These discount vouchers can be bought through independant third-party suppliers.
Retake Policy
The retake policy for the CNA certification exams is the same as for all Novell certifications. Candidates are not required to wait for any period of time between their first and second attempt at passing an exam, however there is a waiting period of at least 30 days before their third and any subsequent attempts to pass the same exam. If successful in passing an exam, a candidate must wait a minimum of twelve months if they wish to retake the same exam. The exam fee is payable for each and every attempt at the exam.
Continuing Certification Registration
Novell credentials do not expire, however applicants will be obliged to sign an agreement before taking their CNA exam agreeing to take any Continuing Certification Registration (CCR) exams that are periodically required by Novell. The onus is on the candidate to keep up-to-date with what CCRs are required. Candidates who do not complete the CCRs may have their CNA certification revoked and may no longer claim to be Novell certified.

The Novell Certified Administrator Enterprise Services (NCA ES) certification is designed for network management professionals who have very little experience (or even none at all) with the Novell product line. This certification focuses on SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and Novell Open Enterprise Server for Linux and is the first step toward higher level certifications such as the NCE (Novell Certified Engineer).
Exam details and overview
To earn the NCA ES qualification, candidates must pass one exam:
050-719 Novell Certified Administrator (NCA) Enterprise Services
which is a form-based exam consisting of 63 questions and 70 minutes in which to complete them. To pass, candidates need to obtain a score of 536 points or higher.
The NCA ES exam covers topics such as:

Managing Users and Groups
Iinstalling the Novell client
Managing login scripts etc.

If the candidate does not complete the CCRs, their NCA ES certification may be revoked and the candidate may no longer claim to be Novell certified.

The Novell Certified Linux Engineer (CLE) certification is the third and final certification in Novell’s Linux Certification Path. Candidates must hold both the Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) and the Certified Linux Professional (CLP) certifications before applying to take the CLE. Candidates must show “engineer level” knowledge of the Linux operating system including Network Services and Security. The CLE will rigorously test the candidate’s skill sets in both Linux and Novell systems.
Exam details and overview
There are separate CLE exams for SUSE versions 9 and 10, so the candidate should take the courses and exams for the SUSE version for which they hold CLA and CLP credentials. Novell recommendeds that candidates take the 5 day SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Network Services and the 5 day SUSE Linux Enterprise Server Security Course, either by self study or through a classroom, before applying to take the CLE exam, although neither is mandatory. The CLE credential requires passing one exam of which there are two versions:
Novell Practicum: 050-693 Novell CLE 9, or
Novell Practicum: 050-698 Novell CLE 10
The exam is a 120 minute pass/fail practical exam (‘Practicum’ in Novell-speak). The Practicum is a rigorous hands-on, non-written exam which presents test items as real world scenarios which are designed to test the candidates experience level. A scenario will comprise numerous objectives which the candidate is expected to be able to complete in a live (virtual) environement. The CLE covers topics such as:
Configuring a mail server
monitoring network traffic
cryptography
general firewall design etc.

Candidates who are already CLE 9 certified can upgrade their credential by passing the following exam:

Novell will offer two versions of the CLP exam, each one tied to the respective current version of SUSE Linux although, at the time of writing, the SUSE 11 exam was not yet available. To earn the CLP credential, the candidate must pass one of the following exams:
Novell CLP 10 – 050-697, or
Novell CLP 11 – 050-721 (not yet available)

The Novell Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) certification is designed for entry level Linux System Administrators to prove their knowledge of the daily administration of a SUSE Linux Enterprise Server network. It is the first certification on the Novell Linux Certification track and is a prerequisite to the more advanced CLE certification.
Exam details and overview
Although not required, Novell recommends that individuals complete both the three day SUSE Enterprise Fundamentals and the five day SUSE Linux Administration courses for the version of the SUSE Linux Operating System they are interested in, e.g. for candidates wishing to be SUSE 11 certified, then the candidate would complete the SUSE 11 Fundamentals course. These courses can be taken in a classroom setting or by self study.
To gain the Novell CLA credential, a candidate must pass just one exam:
050-710 CLA Novell Certified Linux Administrator (SUSE 10) , or,
050-720 CLA Novell Certified Linux Administrator 11 (SUSE 11)
Both versions of the exam are a traditional form-based exam consisting of 69 questions. Candidates are given 90 minutes to complete the CLA exam and must get a total of 512 points to pass the exam. Form-based tests provide every candidate with the same set of questions and are graded on the number of questions they answer correctly. These types of tests will typically demonstrate what knowledge the candidate has, but not their practical abilities. Exam objectives include:

The target audience for the OCA certification is individuals who want to demonstrate their skill level and commitment to their careers as Oracle DBAs. Entry-level DBA’s and individuals looking for a job as a DBA are prime candidates for the OCA credential.
Exam details and overview
Candidates must complete two exams in order to complete the requirements for the OCA credential. They have a choice of three exams for their first exam:
Introduction to Oracle9i SQL
Oracle Database SQL Expert
Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I
Each of these exams has its own specific requirements which can be found on the Oracle Training website.
All candidates must then sit for the Oracle Database Administration I exam. This exam is a 90 minute exam consisting of 70 questions. Candidates must correctly answer 66% of the questions for a passing score, however Oracle clearly states that the passing score may change without notice. Exam topics include Preparing the Database Environment, Create an Oracle Database, Implementing Database Security, Database Maintenance and many others. Retake policy
Candidates must wait 14 days before retaking a failed OCA exam. Candidates cannot retake a passed exam or a beta exam at any time.
Cost
The cost for the first OCA exam varies according to which exam you choose while the cost for the Oracle Database I exam is $125 USD (although there may be local currency variations depending on the candidate’s location). The exams can be taken at any Oracle Testing Center worldwide. Candidates can find their local testing center by registering through the Oracle website but make sure to check with your local testing center for up-to-date price information. Keep a look out for promotional exam discounts from Oracle or for third-party exam voucher specialists to help you save on the cost of the exam.

Novell, the worldwide software company, offers certifications that allow individuals to demonstrate their level of knowledge in both the SUSE Linux and NetWare operating systems. Some of the certifications are designed for system administrators and focus on the operating systems themselves while other certifications are designed for network professionals.

The Linux certification path begins with the Certified Linux Administrator (CLA) in which candidates demonstrate entry-level ability to administer and maintain the SUSE Linux operating system. The next credential in the path is the Certified Linux Professional (CLP) which covers more advanced Linux topics. Finally, the Certified Linux Engineer (CLE) certification allows individuals to demonstrate “engineer” level skills regarding the Linux Operating System. The Certified Linux Desktop Administrator (CLDA) is a stand alone certification which allows individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of the SUSE Linux Desktop Environment, and for candidates who have little, or no real experience with Novell systems, the Novell Certified Administrator (NCA), offers a credential to get started along the Novell certification ladder. The (NCA) certification focuses on both the SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 and Novell Open Enterprise Server for Linux allowing individuals to demonstrate their knowledge of how both products work together.

The NetWare and Open Enterprise Server certification path begins with the Certified Novell Administrator (CNA) and progresses on to the pinnacle of Novell certifications, the Certified Novell Engineer (CNE).
